How to Read and Debug PeopleSoft COBOL

Target Audience This presentation is targeted for the developer or the person wanting to be a developer. This presentation is giving specific technical information to help in understanding a suite of programs that PeopleSoft has developed. These programs are not in the standard PeopleTools suite ut developed in the COBOL language. The structure that PeopleSoft uses is also a bit unique so it takes a bit of understanding. Agenda: System Structure Reading the Trace files Reading the DMS files Reading COBOL First to be covered is the structure that PeopleSoft uses to build COBOL programs; from the files that are used to the directory structure where the files are placed will be discussed. Then a discussion on how to find and read the trace outputs by the COBOL program on both the message log and the trace files. Next comes the easy section on how to read and even modify the DMS scripts that come with each COBOL program. Finally to the heart of the matter on how to read through and understand PeopleSoft COBOL programs. By the time you have read this document you will be able to read through and understand the flow of PeopleSoft COBOL programs including debugging ones when an error occurs. Special tips and tricks are given to help you in debugging COBOL programs as well so that you can come up to speed quickly and easily. You will not learn how to code COBOL programs since this requires much more understanding of the COBOL programming language, as well as the compile process.
